In Virginia, a Longtime Republican Votes for Change

...DeBusk, like many voters, worries about Obama's lack of experience, and she disagrees with him on a handful of issues, particularly his tax policies. But her desire for change is so great, she's willing to take the chance.

"Even if he doesn't do everything the way I'd like, I really feel like he can move us forward," she said.

DeBusk was raised in a conservative military family where discipline, love of country and voting Republican were shared values. She respects McCain's military service, but she'll consider him only if Hillary Rodham Clinton is the Democratic nominee. She thinks Clinton is smart and capable but fears that Republicans so dislike the New York senator that the country will be polarized...

Another article illustrating Obama's attraction to some segments of Republicans and how he'll be stronger vs. McCain.

Will "Obama Republicans" become a new political constituency, the same way that Reagan Democrats were created in 1980?

God what an airhead. Further evidence of why the 19th amendment should be repealed. ;>0

Would you mind, Bill, sharing with us what she said that makes her an "airhead" in your infinite wisdom? Do you judge a book by its cover? She seemed reasonable insightful to me. If you don't get it, maybe it is you who are lacking something, either in your skull or in your chest.

Do I sense bitterness? Unhappy that Obama is appealing to independents and moderate conservatives?

Your latter remark suggests that the 19th amendment didn't go far enough. Perhaps it should have taken away the vote from men.

Beautifully said, Vas. I think Bill has many more shocks in store for him.

Often when we refuse to accept the obvious, we prefer to live in denial while denigrating anyone who diverges from our outdated views. But change always finds a way to race past us in our denial, leaving us fossilised in our ignorance and steeped in bitterness and resentment. Very sad for those who should know better.

lol no doubt, pretty obtuse for even you bill.
got that idea from anne coulter??
that all the problems in this country come from women being able to vote??
what happen to the security minded soccer moms that put bush in the WH??

hey bill why stop there.. we shouldnt let minorities vote either.. or perhaps since they are so poor maybe we could let them vote but let it only coult as 2/3 a vote or something

LOL great job Bill showing us how much republicans like you, love this country and it's freedoms.

i am going to assume that you wrote this before your coffee, as normally you are not sooo dim.

    and to the poster above..
yeah it appears that their are still people out their that think Bush is doing a good job but the liberal media makes him look bad, despite the reality of the mountains of evidence to the contrary.

    Oh, I'd be happy to.

But her desire for change is so great, she's willing to take the chance.

"Even if he doesn't do everything the way I'd like, I really feel like he can move us forward," she said

    Forward to what exactly?

Before DeBusk could tell Walters that she thinks leadership, vision and the ability to inspire the nation the way she thinks Ronald Reagan did are more important than experience, Claire started crying. DeBusk recognized the shout for "Mama."

LOL. One, Ronald Reagan had served not only two terms as governor but had been honing his thinking, as revealed in the recently published editions of his letters, on the issues for years since he first emerged on the national scene in 1964. Further, Reagan campaigned on a very specific set of policy issues. Of course, Ms. DeBusk wouldn't realize this as she was no older than her daughter when Reagan was elected and, I'm ashamed to say as she's an alumnus of my undergraduate alma mater, apparently hasn't read much of the history of that era.

Walters had mentioned that Mitt Romney had dropped out of the Republican race, so DeBusk pulled up a video of Romney and heard him say: "If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign be a part of aiding a surrender to terror."

"I don't get his logic," DeBusk said, and she shut down the computer.

Don't get his logic, Ms. DeBusk? The only difference between Obama and Clinton is who can surrender in Iraq the quickest. In fact, their calls for withdrawing US troops and leaving only a token force to train the Iraqi army and security forces is virtually an indentical copy (except with fewer numbers) of the failed Abizaid/Casey strategy that the president abandoned when he appointed Gen. Petraeus theatre commander.

Romney would have been an efficient manager, she thinks. But still, DeBusk felt he would have been "the same older white man."

"It kind of makes you wonder: Why can't the Republicans put up somebody different? We've had women and minorities serving as governors, senators and businesspeople," she said. "We keep churning out the same people over and over."

I mean this is tokenism pure and simple. Why the hell should someone's age or skin tone be considered as an approximation of why someone should vote for them? What a ditz. I guess Ms. DeBusk must have missed the fact that Gen. Powell seriously considered running for president in 1996 and would have been elected had Mrs. Powell not shot it down. But I certainly wouldn't advocate his candidacy simply based on his race.

With a comment like this, I think Ms. DeBusk should simply register as a Democrat. After all, that's the party of group grievances and group rights.

You came up with a bunch of points to which I could come up with many more counter points. Not once did you show that she was an "airhead", only that you have different perspectives, or that you simply don't understand her.

Later dude. I can't waste any more time on you.

    In Obama's own words:

What I said was Ronald Reagan, back in the 1980s, was able to tap into the discontent of the American people. There were Reagan Democrats. So what I said is we need to tap into the discontent of Republicans. I want some Obama Republicans. I want "Obamacans."
